Acoustic Bowl (Fir)
-
Description
The Acoustic Bowl is a shallow dished vessel with distinct concentric, rippling lines created by thinly packed and laminated veneers and deep gouges forming organic-shaped holes. Alex Downs displayed the first iteration of this piece in a hallway outside his former Brooklyn studio, where visitors noticed a pitching sound while passing by, inspiring the work’s name. His works have a meditative quality embedded in the process, which entails carving coarsely into wood to reveal a multitude of textures that interact with the surface and radiate across the graining in each piece.

Artist
Alex Downs
Alex Downs developed a distinctive method of carving by spinning stacks of wood on a potter’s wheel and shaping them with a chainsaw blade. His organic mandalas have a meditative quality that reflects his renewed interest in Eastern philosophy ever since buying a home in the Hudson Valley across the river from a Buddhist temple.
