  • Description
Jean Alexander Frater reimagines color-blocked canvases through the processes of tearing, reassembling, and resizing, resulting in layered compositions that transform as the viewer shifts their perspective. She merges traditional painting techniques with influences from fiber arts, ceramics, and sculpture, pushing the limits of what painting can be. By using only paint, canvas, and rectangular stretchers, she combines abstraction with both recognizable and mysterious elements, allowing the raw canvas to become an integral part of the artwork’s surface.

Artist

Jean Alexander Frater

Jean Alexander Frater redefines the boundaries of painting by approaching it through a sculptural lens. Rejecting the traditional hierarchy of artistic media, she transforms the canvas from a passive support into an active medium. Through a process of painting, tearing, weaving and layering, she creates intricate compositions that explore the tension between creation and deconstruction.
