Alison Berger

“My friend Alison Berger is a virtuoso,” Holly once wrote. Her obsession with quality of light and commitment to age-old glass blowing techniques result in forms that are both contemporary and timeless. “Her particular genius lies in her alchemic ability to meld glass and light, transmuting the two into unique and luminous forms that are functional yet transcendent.”

Berger fuses nature and architecture to create unique, iconic pieces. Born in Dallas, TX, she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Columbia University School of Architecture. She worked as an architect for many years with Bausman-Gill and Associates and then with Frank Gehry. In 1995, she devoted herself fully to glass design.

Berger studied glass blowing for more than 25 years and apprenticed with sculptor Dale Chihuly. Each piece is hand blown, annealed for two to three days, and then hand-finished and, in some cases, hand-etched. Her innovative work is featured in the Corning Museum permanent collection and has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum's National Design Triennial. Comme des Garçons commissioned her to design an architectural installation as a backdrop for her glass objects at the company's Tokyo Showroom. She was the first American artist ever hired to create a line for Hermés.

HOLLY HUNT has cherished her best-in-class partnership for more than 20 years.
