Exhalation Series
-
Description
Exhalation Series by Eric Gushee is constructed entirely from aircraft cable that’s been unwoven and rewoven back together, giving rise to a complex structure with an ephemeral quality. Created through an abstraction of the fiber art practice known as felting, the cables maintain a pre-distressed quality that allows the wires to weave together in an organic way. The work reiterates Gushee’s experimental approach to testing the boundaries of materials to discover new forms, an ongoing rigorous study of industry and nature, materiality and art.

Artist
Eric Gushee
Eric Gushee’s large metal and wire sculptures are crafted from fiber, weaving and textile techniques. His work employs a conceptual and research-based methodology, drawing from mimetic traditions with abstract variations and adapting figures from nature. His sculptures showcase the profundity of complex systems arising through the repetition of a single act or gesture; he transforms construction and engineering materials into ephemeral yet industrial sculptures that integrate themes from architectural design and the natural and social sciences.
