Description
For the Double Walled Wide Rimmed Plate 2, Alex Downs carved fir plywood nearly to the breaking point, with the vessel’s surface covered by deeply gouged holes. As in a hollowed shell, the work appears delicate and exposed, yet structurally bound by its rich textural form. His works have a meditative quality embedded in the process, which entails carving coarsely into wood to reveal a multitude of textures that interact with the surface and radiate across the graining in each piece.
