Description
The Double Walled Wide Rimmed Plate is a four-foot work made from fir plywood, containing voids and a pattern of erratically fluctuating rings like seismic swells etched across the surface. This piece was Alex Downs’s first iteration of his signature vessels, with its carved interior of two vessels joined at the rim, giving the work a distinct visual weight. His works have a meditative quality embedded in the process, which entails carving coarsely into wood to reveal a multitude of textures that interact with the surface and radiate across the graining in each piece.
